BOXING STANCE
The best way to throw effective punches
To achieve a great stance, follow these simple rules:
- Face forward with your feet together.
- Turn sideways, take a step back and turn your front foot sideways.
- A good way to ensure you have a good stance, is to align the heel of your back foot with the toes on your front foot, and then just take it back from there.
THE JAB + CROSS
The most important combination in boxing
The “jab, cross” is also know as the “one, two”:
- Extend your lead arm out completely, turning your fist over. Make sure to Bring your arm back completely before throwing your cross or “two”.
- To throw the cross, you will throw it the same way as the jab, extending your arm out completely, but this time, turn your shoulder over, and pivot your back foot.
- When you finish throwing both punches, always make sure to bring them back to your face, to maintain form.
THE HOOK
An essential addition to the jab + cross combination
The hook is also known as your “three”, and can be added to the jab & cross combination:
- After throwing your jab + cross, follow the motion and turn your body, pivoting your front foot, and bringing your lead hand around, keeping it parallel to your body.
- The hook should be a tight, fast punch .
- Pivoting your front foot is essential to throwing a good hook, properly supporting your upper body with good footwork will allow for a strong, fluid, and controlled motion.
THE UPPERCUT
A great addition to the jab + cross + hook
The hook is also known as your “three”, and can be added to the jab & cross combination:
- Starting at your stance, keep your arms at a 90 degree angle.
- When throwing the punch, bring your fists up, while keeping your arms close to your body.
- For each arm, remember to pivot the corresponding foot ( lead arm = front foot, back arm = back foot )
